Our story
Hi! We’re Alistair and Gosia and Gardd Afon has been our labour of love since we bought what was a bare 20 acre plot of land in 2020.
For some time we’d had a dream of growing our own organic food and becoming as self-sufficient as possible. When we found Gardd Afon we knew this was the place where we could make that dream a reality and set about working to transform the land into a productive garden and a more diverse habitat. The work has sometimes seemed endless, but it’s also been hugely satisfying. We planted over 100 fruit trees, fruit bushes and 200 native trees. We created 60 vegetable beds and erected 3 polytunnels to grow organic vegetables for ourselves and the local community. Then came the animals: chickens, sheep, goats, cows, pigs and bees. We decided from the outset that we wanted to use a holistic and biodynamic approach to animal husbandry and growing crops so this has meant learning new principles “on the job” and experimenting with new techniques from applying biodynamic preparations, holistic grazing to biodynamic beekeeping.
Gardd Afon is such an idyllic space that we felt sure visitors would like to spend time here. We erected and kitted out two wonderful Mongolian yurts and have been welcoming guests ever since. Take a look at this page for more information.
